I can confidently say homeopathy helps asthma. Even when used alongside conventional medicine, homeopathy helps to strengthen the immune system, allowing the person to slowly reduce medication. Bear in mind that medication should only be reduced under the approval of a doctor, and it is dangerous to stop steroid medication suddenly as this can adversely affect the adrenal glands. I will use a case history to show how homeopathy helped Ms. X, a woman in her late thirties, who was on a very long list of asthma drugs, which she was taking several times a day to control her symptoms. As I mentioned in my talkallergy.com article, often people with asthma, hay fever, allergies and eczema come from an atopic family, meaning several members of the family, perhaps even in different generations, will suffer the same complaints. In Ms. X's family, her mother had asthma and hay fever; as did her grandmother, and her sister plus her children all had eczema.

Ms. X had her first asthma attack at age 13. At age 8 she had steroid injections for her hay fever in addition to having eczema, which still flares when she is stressed. She also has confirmed food allergies. Her asthma was worse in the hay fever season, from February until October, which is quite the lengthy season! Initially we worked on her symptoms, as this is what she wanted cured. Ms. X was determined to come off of the drugs, and I told her at the beginning of treatment it was not going to be a quick fix, as we needed to build up her immune system again, plus get through a lifetime of medicinal suppression.

We had to handle the 'acute' problems that surfaced during her treatment such as sinusitis, chest infections, horrendous hay fever symptoms and bouts of eczema. These were treated according to their symptoms, and all the while, we were working on improving her asthma.

After almost a year of treatment, we have made dramatic improvement to her health. She is still taking the asthma medication, but I would like to do a comparison to show how far she has come in ten months. She is now on Serovent, an asthma drug that is not steroidal. She used to use Opitcran three to four times a week and has only needed it once this year. She used to take Bricanyl every day, now down to twice a week. She used to take two puffs of Becotide twice a day, now down to two puffs once a day. She now takes her Xyzal twice a week unless the pollen counts are high and she is completely off the Beconase.

Here is her comment on the homeopathic treatment of asthma. "Homeopathy has given me another option to conventional medicine and has allowed me to reduce my medication in comparison with a year ago. It doesn't resolve all symptoms but when they start I can generally improve the symptoms with the homeopathic remedies so use less of the conventional drugs. Also, I haven't needed to take antibiotics for sinus and chest infections recently which is an improvement over the previous year."

Ms. X may need to stay on low dosages of the asthma medications for the rest of her life. Only time will tell. We can say for certain though that her health has improved to a point where the drugs are now used less frequently, which in turn shows a strengthening of her immune system. It is a rough rule in homeopathy that a person will need a month of treatment for every year they have had a complaint. I have treated Ms. X for ten months now. She has had symptoms of atopic disease all her life. There is good chance we can reduce even more of the medication whilst enhancing her health and well being.
