Babies that are born by caesarian may be more prone to getting asthmas since they may be missing out on a boost to their immune system. A natural delivery exposes a baby to a host of bacteria that prime them to fight off germs and allergies as they grow up. Babies born by caesarian could miss out on this natural boost.
In the research carried out, scientists swabbed new mothers and their babies and compared the bugs carried by each. The babies born by C-section had different bugs in the babies' mouths and tummies to those born naturally.
As well as giving the immune system a boost, the bugs passed on through a natural delivery may act as a barrier, preventing other, more harmful germs from taking hold.
