Steroids (corticosteroids) are used to help control inflammation of the lungs in asthma patients. Steroids have been used for many years not only in the treatment of asthma, but for eczema and allergy patients too.
Steroids need to be prescribed by a GP and are used in either inhalers, or orally taken in tablet form.
Used correctly, steroids may be a safe and effective way to help keep asthma under control.
Steroids administered in inhalers are used in smaller doses and can be used frequently. Oral steroids in tablet form are stronger and used for shorter periods of time to reduce inflammation and control asthma attacks.
Further advice and guidance can be obtained from a doctor.
