Pets
Unfortunately, keeping a pet can trigger asthma, eczema and allergies in some people, yet a large proportion of asthmatics have pets.
It is the allergens found in pet hair, dander (dead skin flakes), saliva, and urine that cause the problems.
If permanently removing your pet is not an option, there are things you can do to minimise a reaction.
- Either have your pet live outside, or if not
confine your pet to one or two rooms only to reduce the spread of
allergens.
- Have your pet brushed regularly to remove
allergens, lose hair etc.
- Have your pet washed weekly.
- As allergens can accumulate in carpets, curtains
and soft furnishings use mattress and pillow protectors etc and
spray your soft furnishings regularly with an anti allergy spray
designed to eliminate the allergens generated by pets.
- If you have to keep a pet, consider one without hair, eg fish, reptiles etc.
