Complementary treatments
Complementary treatments are non-medical treatments which can be used alongside conventional medications. Although little scientific research has gone in to proving whether or not they work, many people do find relief from their asthma symptoms by using them. The most common reasons why people try complementary therapies are dissatisfaction with conventional therapies and concerns about steroid side effects. These therapies work in a holistic manner: they treat the whole person not just the disease in isolation.
There are a wide range of complementary treatments to choose from such as:
- Acupuncture
- Acupressure
- Alexander Technique
- Herbal Medicine
- Homeopathy
- Hypnotherapy
- Naturopathy
- Nutritional Therapy
- Chiropractic-Spinal Manipulation
- Yoga
- T’ai Chi
- Osteopathy
- Reflexology

When choosing a therapy it is a matter of personal choice and which one works best for you! Because there is now such a wide range of therapies to choose from it is likely there will be something to suit everyone. Always check that the practitioner you use is qualified, and always discuss, with your doctor, what you intend to try. |
Never abandon your conventional medications. Complementary therapies are only to complement your current treatment and not to be used as an alternative.
